Last week we said Totus Tuus. I am all yours. That is a big sentence. The next step is smaller, and you can hold it in your hand.
The rosary is not extra credit for holy people. It is how ordinary Catholics stay with Mary when the week gets loud. Five mysteries. Ten Hail Marys each. You can pray it in a parked car, in a church pew, or walking the dog. If a full five decades feels like too much, pray one. Mary is not keeping score.
Pope John Paul II, whose motto we prayed last week, called the rosary his favorite prayer. He said it was where he learned the face of Christ by looking at Him with Mary. That is the whole point. The beads are not a charm. They are a way to walk through the life of Jesus without getting lost.
I used to write prayers in a little notebook and take them to Mass. The rosary is older than any notebook I will ever fill, and it fits in the same pocket.
The Prayer: The Holy Rosary (One Decade)
Begin with the Sign of the Cross.
On the first bead, the Our Father:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
On the next ten beads, the Hail Mary:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Latin:
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Close the decade with the Glory Be:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
If you know it, add the Fatima prayer:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
That is one decade. Do that, and you have prayed.
The Mysteries, Simply
The Church gives us four sets. You do not need to memorize them this week. Just know what they are.
Joyful: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation, the Finding in the Temple.
Luminous: the Baptism, the Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, the Eucharist.
Sorrowful: the Agony in the Garden, the Scourging, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion.
Glorious: the Resurrection, the Ascension, Pentecost, the Assumption, the Coronation of Mary.
This week, start with the Joyful Mysteries. They begin with Mary’s yes. That is the same yes we practiced when we said Totus Tuus.
Reflection: Beads, Not Performance
A lot of people stop praying the rosary because they think they are doing it wrong. They lose count. Their mind wanders to the grocery list. They feel like they should feel more.
You are not failing. The mind wanders. Bring it back. That is the prayer.
Mary does not need a perfect recitation. She needs you to show up and look at her Son. Each Hail Mary is a step. Each mystery is a room in the house of the Gospel. You walk through. She walks with you.
I am a layperson. I am not a mystic. Some days the beads are consolation. Some days they are just wood or plastic in my fingers and a few honest words. Both days count.
Scripture for Meditation
“And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)
“Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28)
The first verse is the rosary in one line. Mary pondered the life of Jesus. We do the same, with her. The second verse is where the Hail Mary begins. An angel said it first. We only repeat what heaven already said.
Personal Reflection: One Decade, Honestly
- When did you last hold a rosary, and what kept you from picking it up again?
- Which mystery of Jesus’ life do you most need to sit with this week?
- If you prayed only one decade a day, where would you put it: morning, noon, or night?
Write a short reflection in your Journal. Do not write a plan for becoming a better Catholic. Write where the beads will actually live this week. Pocket, dashboard, nightstand.
A Complementary Prayer: A Prayer Before the Beads
Blessed Mother,
I do not come with a perfect mind.
I come with these beads and a little time.Hold my attention when it slips.
Show me the face of your Son in these mysteries.
If I can pray five decades, let me.
If I can pray one, let that be enough.Walk with me.
Lead me to Jesus.
Amen.
Closing Thought for Week 9
Consecration without practice dries up. This week, pray one decade a day. Same time if you can. If you miss a day, start the next one. There is no wrong way to pray. Just pray.
