A Prayer of Trust and Protection
The Memorare is one of the most beloved prayers dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The word Memorare is Latin for “Remember,” derived from the opening line of the prayer:
“Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary…”
Attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153), a French abbot, theologian, and Doctor of the Church, this prayer has stood the test of time as a beacon of hope for those in distress. St. Bernard, known for his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, believed that no one who sought her intercession would be abandoned. The Memorare embodies this belief, reminding us that Mary’s maternal love is always available to those who turn to her in faith.
In times of hardship, sorrow, or uncertainty, this prayer serves as a reminder that we are never alone. Mary’s presence is a refuge, her intercession a source of grace. As a believer in the power of her protection, this prayer resonates deeply with me. It speaks to the true power of prayer—our direct connection to God. Unlike any other creature on Earth, we alone possess the gift of prayer. And using Mary as a conduit for our pleas is a superpower reserved for those who believe in her.
As we journey through this chapter of prayers to Mother Mary, let us reflect on the words of the Memorare and open our hearts to the immense grace that flows through Mary’s intercession.
The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
Reflection: A Refuge for the Weary
The Memorare begins with a call to remember—not because God or Mary forgets us, but because we, in our human frailty, often forget the boundless mercy available to us. It is a prayer of trust, affirming that no one who seeks Mary’s help is left unaided.
This prayer invites us to place our worries, fears, and needs before Mary, just as a child runs to their mother in times of distress. In her Immaculate Heart, there is no rejection, no abandonment—only an open invitation to receive the grace of her Son.
Scripture for Meditation
• “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
• “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5) – Mary’s words at the wedding at Cana, demonstrating her powerful intercession.
Mary always leads us to Christ. She does not act on her own but directs us to the source of all healing—her Son. When we pray the Memorare, we are not just asking for Mary’s help but also affirming our faith in God’s mercy, trusting that through her, we will be guided to divine grace.
Personal Reflection: Have You Fled to Mary’s Protection?
• Think of a time when you felt overwhelmed, lost, or burdened. Did you turn to prayer?
• Have you ever asked Mary for her intercession? If not, what holds you back?
• How does knowing that no one who seeks Mary’s help is left unaided deepen your faith?
Write a short reflection in your BASE Journal, acknowledging your thoughts and feelings about seeking Mary’s intercession in your life.
A Prayer of Trust in Mary’s Help
Heavenly Mother,
I come before you, burdened with the cares of this life,
knowing that in your arms, I will find rest.
You have never abandoned those who seek your help,
and today, I entrust my worries to your gentle heart.
Wrap me in your mantle of love,
guide me toward your Son, Jesus,
and intercede for me in my time of need.
I trust that your mercy knows no limits,
and through you, I will find the strength to carry on.
Amen.
Closing Thought for the Week
